Anxiety is a common condition within the western world which is starting to affect more and more people due to our high stress lifestyles. It can manifest differently in each individual and may appear as a feeling of apprehension, fear and worry. It can also develop into physical symptoms such as having trouble breathing, increased heart rate, hot or cold sweats, loose bowel movements and sleep disturbances. It can also be associated with other medical illnesses such as depression.
Anxiety generally occurs when the body goes into fight or flight mode and the hormones adrenalin, noradrenalin and cortisol increase. Certain people may be more susceptible to suffering from anxiety these include those with a genetic history, those that have undergone traumatic early life experiences and people suffering from chronic high stress, depression or other psychiatric conditions.
Making small changes to diet and lifestyle habits can significantly reduce anxiety levels in most people. Addressing the cause of the anxiety and talking through this with a counsellor you feel comfortable with is first and foremost. Is the cause a lack of self-esteem leading to social anxiety? Does it stem from financial difficulties and a sense of being overwhelmed? Finding the cause reflecting on it and finding ways to deal with the situation at hand is crucial. The inclusion of stress reducing activities in day to day life also needs to be incorporated. These include regular massage, stretching the body daily, acupuncture and regular gentle exercise.
Dietary wise coffee, soft drinks and other caffeinated beverages should be avoided as these can be too stimulating. Small meals containing protein rich foods and quality carbohydrates such as buckwheat, quinoa and brown rich should be consumed every 2-3 hours to regulate blood sugar levels. Foods that are high in magnesium should be enhanced such as green vegetables and nuts as well as the consumption of oily fish to increase omega 3 fatty acids to support adequate neurotransmitter production.
Herbal medicine is also a fantastic modality to use for anxiety as it can be applied across all age groups. The herbs chamomile, lemon balm, passionflower and withania can be taken either as herbal teas for the very young and prescribed herbal tinctures can be given to adults. All of these herbs are easily grown in the garden which can then be incorporated into food and herbal teas. Organic green tea is also helpful as it contains an amino acid called L-Theanine which promotes relaxation. Around home if you find yourself getting overwhelmed burning essential oils such as lavender, rose and chamomile can assist in reducing anxious feelings.
Remember, when struggling with anxiety aim to be present and remove what’s called “catastrophic thinking”. This is where we predict catastrophic events to occur in the future and worry about what has happened in the past. Be in the moment as much as possible and strive to make good choices with a positive mindset.
