Two to three times a week I will indulge in a delicious liquid breakfast - "indulge" you say? Yes - INDULGE!
With everything in life moderation is key. I do not strictly adhere to a raw/vegan/blood type/paleo etc etc diet. I believe your body needs different foods for different mindsets, seasons, life stage and so on. Your body will tell you what it wants, when it wants. I know that as the weather gets cooler my body starts to crave warm foods, herbal teas and the addition of more grains (quinoa, oats and brown rice). In summer I automatically order fresh vegetable juices and go for smoothies in the morning instead of eggs.
My liquid breakfast is something I do when "life" gets in the way of me being able to cook my own healthy meals. For example if we eat out at a resturant that a friend has chosen that doesn't necessarily serve healthy meals or there are no gluten free options I may come home feeling bloated and uncomfortable. Or if (god bless him) my partner cooks dinner - a piece of steak and veggies, this can sometimes be too much for me to digest and I wake up feeling a little heavy in the belly.
My liquid breakfast is the perfect cure - here is the menu:
Entree:
1 glass of tepid water with a large squeeze of lemon and a pinch of organic cayenne pepper. This helps to kick start my gallbladder, liver and digestion.
Main:
I will alternate between a "cleanse" shot or a "liver" shot (sometimes I might even do both!)
Cleanse shot - freshly juiced wheatgrass (you can sprout the seeds yourself).
Liver shot - fresh juiced organic tumeric and carrot.
Protein smoothie - if there is one thing I ALWAYS stick to dietary wise it is having protein in some form in the morning for breakfast - this sets up your blood sugar levels for the day. This is my favourtie smoothie, however you can make whatever tickles your fancy!
1 chopped frozen banana
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
1/2 cup organic yogurt
1 small handful activated almonds
1 heaped teaspoon of spirulina
1/2 teaspoon raw cacao powder
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 heaped tablespoon vanilla pea protein powder
6-8 cubes of ice
Blend until thick and creamy.
Dessert:
An antiinflammatory herbal tea - you can choose any herbal tea you like here (preferably one that doesn't contain caffiene). At the moment I am enjoying a beautiful Ayurvedic detox tea which I add lots of fresh chopped organic ginger too for some zing.
If I have some in the fridge I may take some coconut water kefir and add a sachet of broad spectrum probiotics to this. I pop it into a glass bottle and sip on this until lunchtime!
Enjoy this liquid breakfast treat - it eliminates bloating, feelings of heaviness and that uncomfortable full feeling in the digestive system.
