A mouth ulcer will generally occur when an individual is tired, run down and immune compromised. They can also occur during states of ill health such as injury, HIV infection or during chemotherapy. A mouth ulcer is a break in the delicate mucous membrane within the mouth. There are two common forms of mouth ulcers aphthous ulcers (canker sores) and cold sores which are caused by the herpes simplex virus.

Mouth ulcers may also occur in individuals with deficiencies in Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 and Iron. This is something that can be tested via a doctor through a blood test – even if you are within what is considered the “normal range” you may want to check that you are not on the “lower” end of normal as this may still compromise your health. If you are unsure, request a copy of your blood test from your GP and allow a qualified Naturopath to review the reading.

Naturopathic dietary recommendations include avoiding alcohol, caffeine, refined foods, sugars and saturated fats. The reason for omitting these foods from the diet is due to their inflammatory and immune depleting nature. Rest and minimizing stress are crucial in order to allow the body to heal and the immune system to recover.

From a dietary perspective the key focus needs to be on antioxidant rich and anti-inflammatory foods. These include all of your brightly coloured fruit and vegetables, oily fish, superfood powders, fresh juice, smoothies, soups and broths. If the mouth ulcer is painful stick to soft, easy to digest foods and avoid sharp foods such as nuts, chips and rough cereals.

Zinc is a key nutrient that supports the immune system, when low mouth ulcers can occur. Zinc levels can be tested using a simple test that can be performed by your Naturopath.

I also suggest a herbal tincture that can be held in the mouth as a topical treatment for my clients using calendula, echinacea, licorice and marshmallow. Tinctures are prescription only however, you can use herbal teas and sip them slowly, holding them in the mouth to soothe and heal the affected area.

Remember, Naturopathy is about treating the cause not just the symptom. Why did you get the ulcer in the first place? Are you stressed? Run down? Immune compromised? These are your key concerns that need to be addressed. Maybe a lifestyle overhaul is needed?
